De Droom van Remigratie - een Illusie?

De gastarbeiders, die in de jaren '60 en '70 naar Nederland kwamen, hadden het voornemen om ooit weer
terug te keren naar hun moederland. Dit voornemen is voor de grootste groep echter geen realiteit geworden: het leven in het Westen had toch veel zekerheiden te bieden. Slechts een relatief klein aantal mensen is daadwerkelijk teruggekeerd. De meeste hebben hun gezinnen laten overkomen en zijn gebleven.
In hoeverre is die droom van remigratie ondertussen uitgelopen op een illusie? En leeft deze droom nog steeds onder de vroegere gastarbeiders? Hoe zit het met de verschillende generaties? Wat betekent het dat hun leven niet gelopen is zoals ze hoopten, dat ze tegen alle verwachtingen in hun oude dag hier moeten doorbrengen? Welke angst en hoop leeft er nu onder hun?
In hoeverre is de droom van remigratie iets dat mensen ervan weerhoudt om hun verantwoordelijkheid voor hun aanwezigheid hier te nemen? Zo hebben velen zich nooit actief gerealiseerd dat dit het thuis van zowel hun als van hun kinderen zal zijn. Tot in hoeverre maakt deze droom het ook voor de 2e en 3e generatie moeilijk om als volwaardige burgers deel te nemen aan de Westerse gemeenschap?
Dit omdat zij zich eigenlijk niet geworteld voelen hier, en altijd met een oog in de toekomst en met een oog naar het verleden kijken. Zo zien ze niet hoe ze hier zijn, in het heden.
Een klein gedeelte is wel teruggekeerd. Hoe staat het met deze remigranten? Zijn zij wel tevreden of is hun moederland te radicaal veranderd? Is hun droom waarheid geworden of (ook) niet?

ENGLISH - THE DREAM OF REMIGRATION - AN ILLUSION?
The workers who came to Holland in the 1960's and '70's first had in mind to return to their homelands as soon as they would have enough money. For most, this plan did not work out. There was work and welfare in Holland, and that meant much more security than they could have offered their families at home. Thus only a small percentage returned to their countries of origin. Most men chose for getting their families over to the Netherlands and stayed on.
Still many older people hold on to the idea that at some point they will return. Has this dream of
remigration become just an illusion by now? How do first generation migrants face the fact that they will spend their old days in Holland and not “at home” as they once expected to? Does this dream live on in the following generations?
This also begs the question as to whether and to what extent the dream of return can keep some migrants from realising the responsibilities and consequences of their migration. To what extent is the parents’ dream making it more difficult for the following generations to find a place in the society they live in and, willingly or unwillingly, are a part of?
And then there are those who did return. How are they doing? Are they happy with their decision?
Is the place they returned to the same place they left and kept alive in their dreams?
